Important note regarding MARC record style update
A new style of ebook cataloguing was recently adopted by the British Library and, as a result of this, the MARC records now available for the November 2011 Companions update (and all future updates) will reflect this new style. Our MARC record supplier has provided us with the following information to clarify these changes to our customers:
MARC records for the November 2011 Companions update (and all future records) will be created using the provider-neutral style proposed by the Program for Cooperative Cataloging in the US, working very closely with OCLC and Library of Congress. This means that there will be slight changes to the style of these records.
The provider-neutral model uses print version records wherever available and modifies these to make them ebooks. The main changes consist of the following:
- The physical description will always say 'online resource', often with the pagination of the physical format if relevant (i.e. from a PDF).
- There is now no need for system requirements such as World Wide Web, HTML unless the access is something really unusual.
- The tag giving restriction on access will no longer appear – that should be added by the individual library as appropriate.
- Most important as it involves a different tag - the details of where the title has been taken from (i.e. title from title page) now appear in tag 588 instead of tag 500.
- Extra details of the print version will appear in the 776 tag and any platform details, such as Cambridge Companions Online, will start the 856 tag with a $3 subfield marker.
All MARC records that we provided for uploads prior to November 2011 have not be changed but are still valid records as they stand.
