Important note regarding MARC record style update:

A new style of ebook cataloguing was recently adopted by the British Library and, as a result of this, the MARC records now available for the November 2011 Companions update (and all future updates) will reflect this new style. Our MARC record supplier has provided us with the following information to clarify these changes to our customers:

MARC records for the November 2011 Companions update (and all future records) will be created using the provider-neutral style proposed by the Program for Cooperative Cataloging in the US, working very closely with OCLC and Library of Congress. This means that there will be slight changes to the style of these records.

The provider-neutral model uses print version records wherever available and modifies these to make them ebooks. The main changes consist of the following:

  • The physical description will always say 'online resource', often with the pagination of the physical format if relevant (i.e. from a PDF).
  • There is now no need for system requirements such as World Wide Web, HTML unless the access is something really unusual.
  • The tag giving restriction on access will no longer appear – that should be added by the individual library as appropriate.
  • Most important as it involves a different tag - the details of where the title has been taken from (i.e. title from title page) now appear in tag 588 instead of tag 500.
  • Extra details of the print version will appear in the 776 tag and any platform details, such as Cambridge Companions Online, will start the 856 tag with a $3 subfield marker.

All MARC records that we provided for uploads prior to November 2011 have not be changed but are still valid records as they stand.

To find out more about the provider-neutral style, please refer to the Provider-Neutral E-Monograph MARC Record Guide 2011

January update on DOI News: We reported in December 2011 that the DOI for The Cambridge Companion to the String Quartet (uploaded September 2011) was inactive and was due to be fixed by Crossref. This has now been fixed (the DOI that we provided for this title is now active).

December 2011: DOI News

Invalid DOI links

It recently came to our attention that there are six invalid DOI links within our Cambridge Companion MARC records files. These invalid links were showing error messages, rather than leading the user to the site. These links have now been corrected in all available MARC downloads from this site. The affected titles, and the dates that they were uploaded, are listed below:

January 2011

  • The Cambridge companion to Jung
  • The Cambridge companion to modern British women playwrights
  • The Cambridge companion to Rousseau
  • The Cambridge companion to Spenser

May 2011

  • The Cambridge companion to Jane Austen

October 2011

  • The Cambridge companion to Bach

The links for the titles above (DOI and main site links) have been corrected in all files on this site (MARC records and title lists) but if you would like to download MARC files for only the six titles mentioned above, you can do so here .

We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the above and have introduced an extra proofing stage to the upload process to ensure this does not happen again for any future uploads.

Please note that unfortunately the DOI link for the following title is still showing as inactive, even though it is correct, and this is being manually rectified by Crossref. Once we receive confirmation from them that it has been corrected we will add a note to this page to confirm. The main site URL still works for this title and this can be found within its MARC file:
