Shakespeare Survey Online

There are various ways of searching for topics and articles within Shakespeare Survey Online. All the essays have been keyworded to help you to find discussions of a particular play, group of plays, topic or performance venue. There are nearly 200 of these keywords or themes, available from a drop-down menu to the right of your screen under the 'browse' option. When you have selected your preferred theme, all the articles dealing with that theme will be listed on the left side of the screen for you to access. If you click on one of these, the finder takes you to the top of that article.

Alternatively, for more complex or detailed searches, go to the Advanced Search option at the top right of your screen. This search will operate over the entire text of Survey and throw up the relevant articles with the 'hit' words highlighted. You can complete one or more boxes of the advanced search. For example, if you want to see whether any Northern Broadsides productions have been reviewed in Survey, enter 'Northern Broadsides' under 'field' and select 'performance review essay' from the drop down menu under 'article type'. The relevant essays will be listed and when you view their full chapter content, the selected field words will be highlighted.

For more general information on searching, please see our 'Help with Advanced Search' page.
