Help with Search Results
Understanding Search Results (Quick and Advanced)
The results of a search are sorted according to relevancy ranking, meaning the chapters displayed will pertain most to your search parameters. Relevancy is calculated based on several factors, such as whether the search term occurs in the name of the chapter, how many times it occurs in the extract, and how closely search terms occur to each other.
Results Count
The initial search results page will display a list of ten returns. The total number of returns, plus confirmation of the terms searched for and their scope, will be displayed at the top of the page together with a link to the next set of results. This link also appears at the bottom of the list of results.
Each result includes the name of the chapter, a short description and links to author details and the book overview page. A publication date is also provided for easy reference.
Refining Search Results
Following search (quick or advanced), search refinement controls appear in the right hand navigation on the search results page.
Use the Refine search box to specify a second search to be carried out only within your current results set. This offers a quick way of shrinking your results into a more useful set, without having to go back and alter the original search expression.
Large Numbers of Search Results
Where you have a large number of search results, only the first 500 hits (50 pages of results) found by the search engine will be shown, and some relevant results may be omitted from the search results. This may in some cases mean that no results are returned from a particular subject or book. Where this happens, you are probably casting your net a little wide, and should consider restricting your search to particular subjects or books, adding further keywords or narrowing the focus of your search by using Advanced Search options.
It is unlikely that there will be more than 500 hits directly relevant to your query, and so it is more efficient to refine your search and let the search engine take care of filtering out unwanted material.
